Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena Kinta'nija Peres" April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Called the "Queen of Tejano music" her contribution to fashion and music made her one of the most renowned Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third in the year 2020, in their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was built on Latin songs as well as Latin albums. The media dubbed her the "Tejano Madonna" because of her fashion choices. Her clothes choices also make her among the most important Latin artists. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was often criticized and was refused bookings in venues across Texas because she performed Tejano music, a genre of music that is dominated by males. Her popularity increased when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the year in 1987. She won it nine times. She was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and released her debut album, self-titled in the same year. During that time, her brother became her primary music producer and songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992), which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. The album was praised by music critics as being the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of its songs, "Como la Flor" was one of her biggest song titles. Live! (1993) won the award for Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to be awarded this distinction. In 1994 she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the top-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. The album was widely acclaimed as the first Tejano music album that was commercially viable, and it quickly became one the most popular Latin subgenres of Latin music at the time.
